Driving Through the History of Berryman Products

1918: Berryman Products - Black and White — The history of Berryman Products dates back to more than 100 years ago.

1918: When It All Started

Whenever we take a drive down memory lane, we start in the year 1918. That’s when “Pappy,” (also known as Waldo B. Berryman), traded his prize-winning stud horse for a patented tire sealing formula!

Fast-forward to winter — the next year — and the patent was officially in his name. December 23, 1919… What a wonderful day for Pappy!

But things weren’t easy after acquiring the company’s first product.

With his family and his long-awaited formula, Berryman traveled across the country in a converted wood panel Graham Truck. From coast to coast, they bartered their Sealex Tire Sealer for meals, fuel and accommodations.

When Pappy hit a hot sales area, legend has it he would set up production in a rented room. This meant mixing his formula in the bathtub before filling orders from his truck the next day! Just imagine.

When it came time to set up a permanent shop, the Berrymans settled in the backwoods of Lima, Ohio. Pappy purchased an old shack. Check out how it was converted to serve as the first manufacturing site for Berryman Products:

The most popular products, such as Solvall Tune-Up Oil, OilZall Valve Oil, and Lubrex Super-Lubricant, gained both acceptance and popularity locally. It can be said that they laid the groundwork for the quality reputation that Berryman still has now.

Fun fact: In these days, these oils and lubricants were packaged in glass!

As distribution expanded, Pappy and his only son, Colonel Waldo “Bud” Berryman, Jr., moved the site to Dallas, Texas.

1954-1959: Industry-Leading Introductions

In the early ’50’s, Berryman® Chem-Dip Carburetor and Parts Cleaner was introduced and has become an industry-leading parts cleaner today. Then, in 1958, B-12 Chemtool was developed as a multi-purpose surface cleaning solvent. It didn’t take long to become Berryman’s flagship product!

Our Berryman® B-12 Chemtool® Carburetor, Fuel System and Injector Cleaner is now available in over a dozen products and has grown to become synonymous with the Berryman name.

1960-1970: Legend Waldo B. “Pappy” Berryman Retires

RH Blankenship, a long-time acquaintance of Pappy, learned of the company and its solid reputation. With a strong background in the automotive industry, Blankenship purchased the company in 1970, becoming the new owner of Berryman Products, Inc.

Still located in Arlington, Texas today, the company flourished through the ’70’s and ’80’s with larger facilities and a strong family ownership. As more and more Blankenship family members became more involved with the company, they used their skills, interests and strengths to pursue different areas of responsibilities over the years — blending, packaging, assembling, and shipping the products!

Auto Lubricants: Why, When and How They’re Used

Elbow grease isn’t the only grease needed to keep your vehicle properly maintained. In fact, using auto lubricants might save your elbows from too much strain, as well as make your life a whole lot easier!

Lubricants and greases are essential to prevent premature wear and tear, corrosion and rust on joints, bearings, and any other metal parts in your vehicle.

And you’re probably thinking, “Isn’t almost everything in my car metal?” Well, yes… yes, that is true.

Luckily for you, we have lubricants to meet all your auto needs!

What to Know about your Carburetor

It’s a Power Supply

Found in cars, lawnmowers, and most machinery with a small engine, carburetors are metal tubes located inside of the engine.

Often referred to as a ‘carb’ in the automotive world, a carburetor acts similarly to the ‘carbs’ (carbohydrates) you consume to fuel your body with energy. In your vehicle, this component mixes fuel and air, pushing the mixture into the engine to burn. This process of energy translates to the power needed to move your vehicle.

So when you think of a ‘carb’ in either sense, you can think: power supply!

Sounds like an easy job, right?

Think again! This is a very complex and specific process.

Depending on the driving conditions and power being used, a carburetor has to release precisely the right amount of air and fuel mixture needed to propel the car. Just as you would not expect a person to function without any food, a vehicle cannot work without the correct mixture of air and fuel.

As you can imagine, more air and gas will generate more energy, which will allow your vehicle to accelerate as you step on the gas pedal.

If you have a newer vehicle, you may not have a carburetor. Over the years, they’ve been replaced by the fuel injector system.

How to Maintain your Carburetor

Making sure your carburetor is clean and maintained is essential to preventing corrosion and keeping your car running correctly.

When air is pushed through the carburetor, it slowly dries out the gasoline. This can leave a viscous, greasy residue on the inside of the cylinder. We recommend cleaning your carburetor to get rid of this sticky build-up, as well as any other debris hindering optimal functionality.

For most people, take apart the engine just to clean your carburetor is unrealistic. It takes a big chunk of time to continuously do that!

How-To: A Guide to Cleaning and Protecting Your Car’s Crankcase and Engine Oil System

The best feeling hits during those smooth drives, when you’re confident about the maintenance and care you’ve given to your vehicle.

Our fellow car gurus know the importance of keeping a car’s exterior pristine, as well as the engine inside!

So are you ready to tackle the dirt and grime that has built up in your crankcase and engine oil system?

This post will teach you why it is essential to flush your engine and how to keep your crankcase and engine oil system in tip-top shape. We promise it is not as intimidating as it sounds.

What is an engine flush?

Just as it sounds, an engine flush is a solution to flushes out your engine, breaking down the grease and grime accumulation in your engine oil system. As you can imagine, grease and grime build-up is not a good thing. When there is oil deposit buildup in our engine, your car cannot perform optimally.

If it’s been a while since your last routine oil change, look out for these many symptoms of oil deposits:

> Difficult Start
> Misfiring
> Bad Oxygen Sensors
> Engine “Too Hot”
> Low Oil Indicator Light

Here are the top 3 reasons why it is important to flush out your crankcase and engine oil system:

1: It keeps your engine parts clean.
Unless you have a brand new, low-mileage vehicle, it is important to keep your engine parts clean to keep them running smoothly. The more dirt and gunk that accumulates, the less efficient they will be, causing decreased fuel efficiency and less power.

2: It keeps your new oil clean.
Whenever you get an oil change, the old oil from your engine is drained, and new oil is added. If you do not flush your tank, junk that builds up will contaminate your new oil, which causes the new oil to be just as dirty as the old oil. If you flush your engine regularly, you can even go longer between oil changes since your oil stays cleaner, longer.

3: It helps give older cars a fresh start.
If you have a high-mileage vehicle that has not been well maintained, it is a good idea to give it an oil flush followed by an oil change. This will help the car run smoother and could save you from issues in the future. Summer Car Care: A Checklist

The summer heat has officially arrived, and unfortunately—even though it is boiling hot—your car still needs care during the summer months.

Because of the harsh weather conditions, this season is among the most critical times of the year to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape. Hot temperatures can cause many issues for your car if you are not prepared.

Let’s look at some common car problems during the summer, as well as what you can do to combat them.

✔️ Check your Oil Level

Oil is essential to keep your engine lubricated and working correctly. An engine without oil will burn out…and that’s one costly mishap!
To ensure this does not happen, keep up with your car’s oil change schedule.With summer being the time for lengthy road trips, we must continuously check levels and regularly err on the side of caution.

Likewise, when there is oil deposit buildup in our engine, your car can’t perform optimally. If it’s been a while since your last “routine oil change”, here are a few symptoms of oil deposits to look out for. Prolong the life of your oil, and ultimately, your engine!

✔️ Check your Fluid Levels

Oil is not the only vital level to check before driving your car in these warm months…
As the beating sun is known to evaporate liquids, it is also essential to check other fluid levels, such as:
∙ your windshield wiper fluid
∙ coolant
∙ transmission fluid
∙ brake fluid
∙ and power-steering fluid.

Another tip to remember is that gas evaporates faster in heat. If possible, try to park your car in a garage, or in the shade, to prevent your gas from evaporating quicker!

✔️ Check your Car Battery

As you can imagine, heat and car batteries do not mix. During these rough few months, we recommend getting your car’s battery tested here and there, to see if it needs replacing.
It’s always good to carry jumper cables and/or a battery jump box, so you’re ever stranded with a “dead” vehicle, you’ve got options. Better safe than sorry, especially on long road trips.

Do your brakes squeak, or seem spongy? This means it is time to get ’em checked!
Making sure your brakes / brake fluid are regularly maintained will help prevent potential issues.

Always look after your tread and tire pressure levels to see that they are optimal during the seasons.

Q: I was wondering how much Tire Sealant is needed based on the size of the Tire.

A: The standard formula for ounces per tire is: width of tire (in inches) x height of tire (in inches) x 0.04. If your tires are 10.5” wide and 31” high, then you would need about 13 oz per tire. The formula assumes a moderate speed to distribute the sealant thoroughly. If this is a slow-speed application, then you may need to double the quantity.

Q: When using the B-12 Chemtool total combustion kit, is there a process for waiting after it’s been run through? Should I let the car sit for an hour and then restart it, or is it good to go immediately?

A: Good news, there is no need to wait. You should start and drive it right after using the kit.

Q: When do I have to clean fuel injectors?

A: Fuel injectors generally respond very well to quality fuel additives, but you still need a “deep clean” occasionally. Use our Berryman® B-12 Chemtool® Total Fuel System Clean-Up about once a season for cleaner intake valves and combustion chambers.
