So many queries come in everyday regarding our wide array of products, so we’ve put together a list of a few frequently asked questions — all in one convenient place!

Transmission Stop Leak

How much transmission stop leak should I use in a 6 quarts transmission?

Great question! We recommend using one entire bottle of our Berryman Transmission & Power Steering Sealer (part #0712) in automatic transmissions. But please be careful not to overfill.

Chem Dip

I’m about to dip my carb parts, but my baseplate won’t fit. I’m going to have to put it in something else to clean it. What should I use? I’m also concerned about rinsing with water. Do I rinse the parts in the sink and let it go down the drain?

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you’re trying to use either part #0996 or part #0996C, both of which ship in a round, 1-gallon paint can. If that is the product in question, it is safe to temporarily transfer it to just about any type of container, including steel, plastic, and glass. Both of those part numbers are water-based, so warm water is also the best way to rinse them off. Once the carb cleaner has been rinsed off, you can let the base plate air dry or perform a follow-up rinse with carb spray or use compressed air to blow it dry. Per the directions, if either the base plate or the carburetor itself are aluminum, a zinc alloy, or “pot metal,” do not soak the part(s) for more than 4 hours. Instead, soak for 30-60 minutes and use a soft-bristle brush or even a toothbrush on all accessible surfaces and repeat the process, as necessary, ensuring a cumulative soak time of no more than 4 hours. Fuel Injector Cleaner

Is the fuel injector cleaner best for cleaning — and is this a toss in the gas tank product? Will the can of B-12 that cleans entire fuel systems equal to the stand-alone fuel injector cleaner?

Berryman B-12 Chemtool Fuel Injector Cleaner (Part #0116) is an in-tank additive that is great for fuel injector cleaning under most circumstances. For more severe situations, we recommend B-16 High Mileage Fuel System Rejuvenator (Part #7516). This in-tank additive offers one-tank cleanup not only of fuel injectors but also intake valves and combustion chambers. If you’re looking for a stand-alone/thorough-rail cleaner, we offer a pressurized product version (part #1120) and a pour product designed to be used with a canister and compressed air.

I was wondering what the shelf life for the diesel injector cleaner is? I have two older bottles of it. Can I still use it?

Thanks for asking! Our fuel additives’ standard shelf life is two years, but they can last up to 5 years. We hope that helps!

Is it safe to use with 100% non-ethanol gasoline?

Yes! Berryman B-12 Chemtool Fuel Injector Cleaner (part #0116) was initially formulated for use with ethanol-free gasoline. However, it contains 100% high energy solvent technology or “H.E.S.T.” chemistry, so it is also compatible with all gasoline and ethanol mixtures, including E10, E15, and E85.

I accidentally put some in my oil crankcase, thinking it was oil additive. Should I be worried?

Our Berryman B-12 Chemtool Fuel Injector Cleaner (part #0116) is safe in engine oil up to 2 oz per quart of oil. Just start the vehicle and let it idle until it’s at operating temperature. However, you will likely need to change the oil and filter afterward.

Diesel Engine Fuel System Cleaner

Which additive is suitable for a diesel car’s injection system cleaning, equipped with a diesel particulate filter? Also, which one is proposed as a preventative measure and how often to use it?

If you’re only looking for cleaning and lubricity (as opposed to a combination cetane booster or cold-flow improver, too), then the best product for that application is Berryman Diesel Injector Cleaner (part #0518), which offers one-tank cleanup of both traditional and high-pressure common rail injection systems as well as a lubricity additive for the longer fuel pump and fuel injector life. Regarding the frequency of use, a good rule of thumb is to use the product every time you change the oil. However, you may certainly use 0518 more frequently if warranted.

You’ve probably heard of them, but have you ever used them?
Or, maybe you’re still skeptical about their functionality?

Let’s clear the air and talk about how they work and when they can be extremely useful.

There are 2 Types: Fuel Stabilizers and Fuel Performance Enhancers

It is known that both stabilizers and performance enhancers are made from a mix of cleaning substances to help improve the engine performance.

Purpose is the main difference between the two — which all depends on the age, mileage and use of your vehicle.

Fuel savers, another term for fuel stabilizers, are typically used in older vehicles that sit for weeks at a time… whereas fuel performance enhancers are meant for cars that are driven often.

High Mileage Vehicles

What happens if I decide not to use fuel additives?
As a result of the combustion process, carbon is deposited into all parts of the engine, like fuel injectors, carburetors, intake and exhaust valves. This can cause problems such as, hard starting, terrible fuel economy, and misfiring. What types of engine degreasers are out there?

Liquid
Liquid degreasers are very potent and usually they need to be mixed with water before being applied. They are powerful and known for eliminating grime and grease. But with great power often comes more danger… These products can greatly injure your skin and eyes if you make contact with it. If it is not diluted properly, it can also eat away at plastic or rubber components in your vehicle. To mitigate any danger or risk of injury, we recommend only using liquid degreasers if you know how to properly use them.

Ammonia Based
Ammonia based engine degreasers are typically used for interior components such as chrome and glass. Unlike liquid degreasers, ammonia degreasers are not nearly as powerful.

Foam
A foam degreaser is typically used for the outside of your engine. It is also most often used when you have a lot of electronic components in your engine bay. With foam you do not have to use water to rinse the foam off, therefore you lower the risk of damaging those electronic components.

Degreasing your Engine: When, Why & How

Maybe you just purchased a used vehicle. Maybe you’re selling your car and looking to get the most value for it. Or, maybe you just want to keep your engine in tip-top shape!

No matter the reason, degreasing your engine can be very beneficial.

For the sake of time, we’re only going to be talking about degreasing the exterior of your engine.

Since you probably don’t want to take apart your entire engine and deep clean every crevice, we’re not even going to touch on our easy Chem-Dip® parts cleaner that’s known for removing gum, varnish, and fuel residue.

We’re also going to skip over the discussion of our simple pour-in Berryman® Total Engine Tune-Up fuel injector cleaner that disperses moisture and provides smoother top-engine performance from within the fuel tank.

Right now we’re all about tackling the outside of your engine — getting rid of that built-up oil, grease, and dirt!

Here’s WHY you should degrease your engine:

Shine

Your car may look squeaky clean from the outside, but under the hood tells all.

Every buyer wants a clean car, inside and out! A quick 15-minute degreasing session could be the ticket to getting more money for your vehicle; we suggest improving the resale value with a pristine machine.

Performance

While the proper engine degreaser will shine up your engine, it will also remove road grime to improve your engine’s performance.

The more dirt you remove from the exterior of your engine, the more you reduce the chance of debris making way into your filter.

Here’s WHEN you should degrease your engine:

Since there really isn’t a set time frame on when you should degrease your engine, it typically depends on how often you drive your vehicle and the road conditions.

We would recommend degreasing your engine whenever you see grease, dirt or grime start to build up, or as a part of your maintenance every 6,000 to 10,000 miles—at the same time as your oil changes.

Some TIPS for degreasing:

First off, watch the weather channel and choose a warm day! This will help the engine dry quicker after you’re done cleaning it.

Secondly, do not degrease your engine when it’s still hot from use. Leave your car off for at least 15 minutes before degreasing your engine; this should keep you from burning yourself!

Next, make sure to remove the negative terminal to the battery. You can keep from major damage by ensuring this does not become wet in the cleaning process. We suggest you also remove any plastic pieces under the hood as these materials can be cleaned separately.

And finally, make sure to cover any other electronic components! It’s recommended to use an old towel or a spare piece of plastic to prevent any cleaning substances from getting into unwanted areas.

If you can avoid the few potential (costly) errors, you’ll likely find that degreasing is an easy, rewarding process! The satisfaction of having a nice, shiny engine is totally worth the effort.
