9 Reasons To Keep Your Gas Tank Full

Ever hear this argument?

“Letting your gas run low in the tank is good for your car.”

A lot of people believe this, however, empty space is not always a good thing. This is especially true when it comes to your gas tank!

Let’s dive right into the nine reasons why you should keep your gas tank full.

Empty Space

Imagine you have a water tank at your home that you use to hold well water for your home. Would it be better to keep the tank full, or low?

>> The no-brainer answer: Full.

Because you don’t want to take the risk of sediment building up in your tank and contaminating your water, you wouldn’t want the tank to be empty.

Well, the same principle applies to your gas tank in your vehicle! When you let your tank get all the way to empty, you risk your fuel pump sucking in the sediment that has built up in your tank. As you can imagine, sediment in your fuel pump is no bueno.

Not only will this clog up your fuel pump, but it may also harm your engine.

Condensation & Corrosion

You leave a water bottle half full in the sun. What happens next?

>> Answer: It gets condensation in the top of the bottle that then drips down into the bottle.

The same thing happens in your fuel tank.

If there’s a lot of moisture outside and your gas tank is only ¼ full, then condensation will begin to build up. As you know, oil and water do not mix! Because of this, water sinks to the bottom of the fuel tank, where it is then pumped into the engine — ultimately causing engine corrosion.

During the winter, condensation can cause even more significant issues.

Say you leave your tank half-empty, and there’s some extra moisture in the air. Water droplets drip into the gasoline and towards the fuel pump. In cold temperatures, the water can freeze over your fuel pump lines and cause major issues! For instance, with frozen fuel lines, the odds you’ll get your car started are very slim.

In keeping your gas tank full, however, there won’t be room for condensation build-up.

Mechanical Issues

Fuel is not only used to power your vehicle, but it is also used as a cooling agent to cool down your engine and prevent it from overheating.

If you have just a little gas in your tank…

your fuel pump is only sucking in some gas.
your fuel pump is also sucking in air — as there isn’t enough gas.

Added air into your engine not only can cause overheating in your engine, but it can also cause other major mechanical issues.

An easy situation to avoid this — you guessed it — by merely keeping your gas tank full!

Efficiency

For most of our lives, we have thought that keeping our gas tank low will improve our efficiency. It makes sense…

>> The less weight to pull, the more efficient your car is.

A myth that people often believe:

If you get your brakes replaced, then you don’t need them cleaned!

This is false; every component of the braking system needs to be cleaned.

Though your brake pads might be replaced often, the rotor, the brake caliper, springs, and spindle still need to be cleaned every time your brake pads are replaced, to maintain even wear and proper friction.

What’s a brake cleaner, you ask?

A brake cleaner is a combination of chemicals that break down oils, rust, debris, and dirt.

First: Ever heard of DTV?

DTV or Disc Thickness Variation is caused by build-up in your brakes that cause uneven thickness in your rotors.

When your discs are uneven, the pressure is applied to the rotor in uneven places; the disc pads don’t apply enough pressure, creating a vibration when braking. This also is extremely tough on your brake pads, causing them to deteriorate quicker. Not good!

Second: Your ABS

As your wheels and rotors attract build-up over time, the anti-lock braking system (ABS), which is exposed, also catches the debris, dust, and dirt. How to Clean your Breaks — The Process:

– Protect your eyes, hands, and lungs with safety glasses, gloves, and a face mask!
– Remove the wheels and tires from the vehicle.
– Grab your Berryman Brake Parts Cleaner and a drip pan.
– Begin at the rotor’s top, moving down the rotor, making sure to get every part of the debris, brake dust, and rust. Make sure to hold the spray pan directly underneath the rotor while spraying.
– Use a controlled burst of spray when spraying the wheel to ensure you are not over-spraying the wheel.
– Once the entire wheel is covered with brake cleaner, let the brake drip dry, keeping the pan underneath to catch any drips.
– Once the brake is dry, you are all done! How easy was that?

The Best Way to get Gasoline Off of your Hands or Clothes

Whether you work on cars often, or just happened to get some gasoline on your hands while filling up, you’ll want to fully remove the matter from your clothes and skin.

We’ve all been there — that’s why we’ve gathered some very helpful tips and tricks for ridding of gasoline and its pungent smell!

Washing Gasoline Off of Hands — Not only does gasoline leave a lingering smell when it gets on your hands or clothes, but it also dries out your skin and breaks down the fabric of your clothing.

Even when you can’t smell the gasoline on your hands, someone else likely will… The substance often leaves a thick film of oil on your hands, making the smell challenging to remove, even long after the initial contact.

Not washing your hands immediately after getting gas on them can significantly damage your skin, as well; it’s known to cause chemical reaction, burning, or in some cases, skin lesions. Not cool!

6 Tips for Eliminating the Smell and Residue of Gasoline from your Hands:

Tip #1: When washing your hands, try scrubbing in water for at least 2 minutes before adding any soap; make sure to get under each fingernail and in each crevice!
Tip #2: Try using an anti-grease soap. Scrub the soap into your hands with a dry towel first. Use a toothbrush to get the soap underneath your nails. After you’ve scrubbed your hands, go ahead and rinse the soap off.
Tip #3: If you do not have a heavy degreaser — and scrubbing isn’t quite working — try pouring some hydrogen peroxide onto your hands. Or, if you’d rather not use hydrogen peroxide, you can dip into some common household ingredients, instead… baking soda and vinegar! Scrubbing these two components into your hands can greatly remedy the situation. Be sure to rinse it all off after a few minutes.
Tip #4: Whether you have more sensitive skin or looking for a more natural method, try cutting a lemon and rubbing your hands with the lemon slice. The acid in the lemon deteriorates the grime and build-up of the oil.
Tip #5: If you have tried all of these tips and nothing seems to be getting the smell off, try purchasing a mechanic hand soap, made specifically to eliminate odors, and get rid of the grease!
Tip #6: Although getting gasoline on your hands is sometimes inevitable, try using gloves as often as you can. This not only protects your hands, but it will make clean-up easier, as well. And your skin will thank you later!

Gasoline Stains: Laundry — Vinegar helps eliminate the odor, while breaking down the residue.

Advice for Dealing with Oil or Gas-Stained Clothes:

Tip #1: Try purchasing a laundry detergent that’s meant to eliminate odors and fight against harsh stains. Please ensure that you’re washing the stained clothes alone. Gasoline residue can stain any clean materials that are added into your wash load, so keep them separate!
Tip #2: Try soaking your clothes in a mixture of vinegar and hot water for 30 minutes before washing. The vinegar counter-reacts to the oil and eliminates the odor — while breaking down the gasoline residue. The vinegar also keeps the gasoline from getting into your washer, which will make sure the gas does not stain your next load of laundry.
Tip #3: Before putting your clothes in hot water and vinegar, you can scrub each gasoline stain with baking soda. The baking soda should help deteriorate the build-up of oil.
Tip #4: Don’t let the stain sit for long! Try to wash your clothes immediately after they are stained with gasoline. Like your skin, you do not want the gas and grease sitting on your clothes long; as time passes, the stain becomes harder and harder to remove.
